Music You Should Know: Smith Westerns
Thank you Chicago, Illinois! Why in the hell do I thank Chicago? For breeding the Smith Westerns into the music scene. If you could fuse indie rock, glam rock and some local kids that play music in their parent’s garage together (not literally of course), you will certainly have the Smith Westerns.
I insist on hitting repeat when listening to the first track “Weekend” off their sophomore album, Dye It Blonde which was released on Jan. 18th 2011 through Fat Possum. Its name does it justice, quite frankly. You know that scene in the story of your life where everything is going so well, that you feel like Ferris Bueller? This is the song that should be playing in the background for that moment.
The Smith Westerns have been in the scene since 2007, and although still quite young in age that hasn’t stopped them from touring the U.S. and Europe with bands like Florence and the Machine, Belle and Sebastian, MGMT, Girls and Passion Pit.
If you live for that retro sound of the 1960s topped with some edge, you’ll definitely cater a soft spot in your heart for the Smith Westerns.
Listen to “Weekend” below!
